Rhofade for bags under your eyes

It is true that there may be significant benefits available to rosacea sufferers from using prescription products off-label. Some well know off-label treatments for rosacea include accutane, macrolides, oral ivermectin and beta-blockers.

But how about using something like Rhofade for essentially a cosmetic condition though? Is this something safe and worthwhile? Well Dr. Allenby for one, is advocating using Rhofade to treat dark circles around your eyes.

Why dark eye circles with Rhofade?

The suggestion from Dr. Allenby is that if the dark circles underneath the skin around your eyes are due to increased small blood vessels then oxymetazoline hydrochloride 1% in the form of Rhofade is an option.

    Rhofade (by prescription only)

Dr. Allenby says that if the reason for darkness around the eyes is due to increased small vessels underneath the skin, she uses a small amount of Rhofade (oxymetazoline hydrochloride cream 1%) a prescription cream that vasoconstricts these small vessels and erases the red of the skin, off label.
    What is off-label use?

Doctors are allowed to prescribe a prescription-only treatment for a condition other than the condition for which it was approved. So a treatment approved for one condition can legally be prescribed to treat something completely different.

    Is Off Label Prescribing Allowed?

So is your doctor breaking any rules prescribing you something that hasn’t been approved as a treatment for rosacea?
Not according to the FDA, no. The only requirement is the drug is used in the practice of medicine, and has been judged as safe and effective for the condition for which it was approved.

    Would you use it?

So would you be willing to either seek a prescription for, or use your existing Rhofade to try to reduce dark circles around your eyes?

    It makes sense.
But Rhofade is still not approved in any country in Europe. And I can’t find any application submitted for approval.
