    Default Los Angeles area Derm?

In June of 2007 I went to Dr. Boris Zaks in Beverly Hills. It was a waste of time. I did not like the guy at all and he never even sat down to talk to me.

He dx'd me with Steroid Induced Rosacea and I tried to get a PA for my elidel so that I would not have to wait 45 days for another refill from my Ins company and I argued with the lady on the phone over getting one and she said that prior authorizations are done by the patient. That makes no sense since the Ins company wants it from the Dr.

SO I am thinking of going to the other Dr I researched back then who is a female.

They both seem to cater to celebs, so not sure but will call and ask for free consult. FOr Dr. Zaks I paid $140.

I have steroid induced rosacea and I go to the man who probably has written more papers on the topic:

Marvin Rapaport, M.D.. 436 North Bedford Drive, #306. Beverly Hills, California 90210, 310-274-4401

Dr. Marvin Rapaport is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Jefferson Medical College, both in Philadelphia. He is a clinical professor in Medicine/Dermatology at the University of California Los Angeles Medical Center. He is also a past Attending Chief, Dermatology Division, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Rapaport is a medical consultant to the Federal Trade Commission and the cosmetic division of the Food and Drug Administration, as well as several pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies. He is board-certified by the American Academy of Dermatology and is a member of the American Medical Association.

I went to Zaks, what a joke. I thank God I didn't allow him to touch me. His staff is horrible. They are loud, and rude. I guess since they are in Bev Hills, they think they can act that way and people will still pay. I asked them to submit a short letter to my Insurance, and they said the doctor's time is too valuable. Right then, I said forget it. How can I put my face in his hands if he doesn't care a lick about his patients. He just wants the cash.

I also have steroid cream induced Rosacea P & P and Seb Derm. He wanted to use PDT (Vbeam I guess) and another laser, probably IPL. Together it would cost about 1K per session and 4 - 5 sessions.

I then tried Doctor Helen Fincher at UCLA Med Center after reading that her office is on the list of Rosacea Derms they recommend. She wants to use just Vbeam (PDT or Photo Dynamic Therapy with Levulan for my Seb Derm and P&P) and she said that will also be the ticket for my Rosacea (entire face is red). It will only cost $500 per session and only 2 sessions. If my Insurance doesn't cover, I can definitely handle that price. She thinks my insurance will cover most if not all however as she will say it is for Acne and pre cancerous sub dermal cells. One great thing about using PDT (Photo Dynamic Therapy) is the levulan highlights any cells under the skin that are abnormal like cancerous or over active sebaceous glands to which I have both I'm quite sure. It is an acid like gel that is left on for an hour or 1.5 before the Light therapy. The Vbeam then shrinks the Seb glands to normal and kills the highlighted pre cancerous cells. I've had lots of sun damage due to my years of sports, and she really thinks this will be all I need. You might want to give her a visit. She is very very nice, has lots of experience with Vbeam and she has Rosacea herself though very mild pink cheeks is all :-), and she's cute! She treats all of the UCLA students and she says it works great for their acne.

She says for most of her patients the good results last for a couple years or in some cases many more. For some, they never needed a touch up and love the resultls. For others, you might have to get 1 touch up per year or so to keep the results. She was a pleasure to speak with. I am scheduled for Feb 28. She says there might be some bruising that may last for a couple days, otherwise nothing permanent. Her worry is that I must avoid sunlight for a minimum of 2 days. She said that is the only side effect. The sun can burn my skin after this treatment and cause permanent burn scarring. That is her only concern. I wish I could say the same lol.

    Her number: 310-794-7422

Best of luck and let me know what you decide. I'm anxious to hear. I also will let you know how my procedure goes. I also see the doctor Monte suggests. I'll call his office as well just to make sure I've made the best decision.

    Regards
    Paul

Monte, what has he done and how are the results? What all do you suffer with? Are you taking any meds as well? Please be detailed as possible if you have the time.

I' want to make the best decision about who to see before my first appointment. I have Rosacea P&P and Seb Derm. I also have steroid cream induced.

    Thanks much

    Paul,

Dr. Rapaport is one of those Derms who understands the anxiety and frustration most of us suffer from as a result of rosacea/SebDerm and it is because of his experience and compassion that I highly recommend him...bottom line, he cares and knows what he is talking about.

As far as procedures, I have not had any with him. And quite honestly I don't believe he is not a laser/pdl specialist. However, he can provide you with the guidance you need to make decisions on how to approach your condition.

I have been dealing with this for a while and have done my share of research. If I were to decide to go for laser/pdl, I would probably go to Dr. Soldo. This is based on the positive posts on this site.

I buy into the less is more mindset and just use a mild cleanser. I have tried many products and meds and all just irritated my face.

    Hope that helps.

    ~M
