SIBO rosacea link

I had a second zap for thread veins from Pulse Dye today. Dr.Cayton at the Royal Free is a nice guy, would recommend him as a dermatologist to anyone in the UK. I talked to him about Rifaximin/SIBO today but he hadn't heard of the link. He was kind enough to look through the index of his journal for the drug, willing to give it a shot...but it wasn't there! Regret not bringing a copy of the study to him, but that's printer trouble for you.

I wonder if getting an apt with a gastroenterologist is the best route here. I think I'm a likely candidate for the SIBO, so we'll see. Kinda tired of spending money/thinking about my skin at the moment!

Just wanted to pipe in to say thank you to all who contributed to this thread over time. I have a ton of questions and need to organize myself a bit. I have an appt in a couple wks with a specialist and need to streamline how I communicate my issues.

I'm curious if there are any updates from those who are mid-treatment (although really, I think a holistic approach that is the essence of this thread could very well be a life style, not a treatment). Hope the thread stays alive, or if there is another more current thread I've missed - would love a pointer.

Note to Starlite - that video was so moving... loved it. I, too was a vegetarian for 20 yrs. I am from the midwest and grew up on the typical "meat and potatoes and dessert" diet, although I generally hated food and was pretty well malnourished as a kid. As I grew I had no position about meat, I just hated it. I hated chewing it and hated swallowing it. I think the chewing is rooted back to a lot of dental work I had as a child - teeth were sore and sensitive a lot (tiny mouth and large teeth - a lot of procedures to widen my pallet); and I had trouble swallowing meet for some reason - probably psychosomatic because I choked on it a couple times. But when I started having severe digestion problems that left me without the ability to digest solid food, I had to re-evaluate my food choices. It wasn't easy but I'm much better now and eat only organic meats (they still contain microbes and bacteria but it has certainly made the transition less stressful for me).

have there been any more success stories treating SIBO with flagyl, rifaximin, peppermint oil, oil of oregano, garlic, etc.?

I need to figure this out ASAP and the two doctors I've gone to asking to be referred to a gastroenterologist basically refused to do it for me. Dermatologist was no help whatsoever as well. Seriously wondering why I bother paying for health insurance.

Stevie-f, my SIBO is completely gone, after a few relapses. I tried a number of things, but in the end the GAPS diet healed me deeply enough to recover my entire immune system. Raw crushed garlic, one clove with meals 1-2 times daily was very effective. Fermented vegies(sauerkraut) for digestive and bone broth for healing the gut and reducing inflammation, proved to be great allies for me. Oregano oil is strong and should be used carefully, as it can wipe out good bacteria from the colon as well as the small intestine.
I didn't introduce probiotics, other than ferments until the SIBO was gone, as a rebuilding strategy. The diet heals the gut and starves the bad bacteria out, while restoring the immune system and organs in a deep way.
In my experience, the antibiotics create further imbalance, which is how my SIBO started.
Once my immune system restored itself, my food sensitivities as well as Rosacea subsided.
Nurture, nurture, nurture ones way back to health for deep recovery.

thank you for your timely response. I am at my wits end here. I bought enteric coated peppermint oil today and I've been taking probiotics. Just recently started avoiding dairy and have always tried to stay away from sugar and gluten, yet still it persists. I'll try the garlic and the oregano oil as well. I have Oreganol will that work or does it need to be coated in pill form? I have a jar of Bubbies sauerkraut in the refrigerator I'll start eating tomorrow. This GAPS diet, I assume is available online somewhere? I am trying to order Rifaximin from goldpharma we'll see how that works out.

I have SIBO too, and recently been getting rosacea on the sides of my nose. My SIBO is usually controllable with strict dieting, but that's no fun. Glutamine definitely helps, though I think there is a significant difference in the purity of certain brands. I'm going to try some of the remedies mentioned in here, especially betaine!

I'm new to this group, and my compliments. Very thoughtful postings.

First, I am a doctor. Secondly, I had sudden onset rosacea about a year ago. I recently developed IBS as well. I started doing research, and I don't mean reading blogs, but reading actual scientific literature. There is huge support for the connection between Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and rosacea. There is also a link between overall carbohydrate sensitivity and rosacea.
I started a severe carbohydrate restriction diet (find out what that really is, not what you think it is: read Gary Taubes "Why We Get Fat")
and a course of Flagyl. Astonishing results with the rosacea and the bowel issues within days. There is another new antibiotic, but it is way expensive. I can't give advice here, but if I could, I'd say go with the Flagyl before the expensive stuff.

The article is "Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in rosacea: clinical effectiveness of its eradication.": Parodi, A et al. Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 2008, Jul 6 (7): 759-64. The abstract is in Pub Med. Google it. Sorry I couldn't give you the actual link.

Trust me, in the world of medical research, unless these guys are lying, this is an over the top result. I don't know why after four years it isn't standard treatment. Probably because dermatologists don't read GI literature, and GI doctors don't treat rosacea.


Just remember, for years, ulcers were thought to be a result of stress. An article just like this came out showing it was from a bacteria, Heliobacter pylori, and overnight, treatment of ulcers changed. This study is a game changer too. Print it out. Take it to your doctor. Don't go in saying "I did my research and this is what I found, and what I want. It pisses us off when you do that.) DEMAND a trial of Flagyll (One gram, twice a day, first day, then 250mg three times a day for seven days. Generic Flaygyl (metronidizole is $10 at Walgreens.) Good luck and clear skin. If it works for you, spread the word.

this is an old post but I want to ask a question about flagyl.

I tried it for 5 days 500mg, once a day. ( my doctor told me use it three times a day but I used it once a day) when ı was using it my rosacea really got worse. my p&p increased(normally I have so little) and also my redness and sensitivity is also got worse.so I stopped using it.

do you think it was the 'things get worse before they get better' issue or what? should I give it one more go?
