Default What intensity ("mcd") is safe?

I'm looking into buying some red LED bulbs (containing clusters of led's) to put into a lamp. I figure that doing it this way is going to be cheaper, since you're not paying a premium for something marketed as 'medical'.

Anyway, I'm seeing some pretty high ratings for the intensity of the led's contained in these bulbs. Like 20,000, or even 24,000 mcd (millicandela). I'm pretty sure that that's quite a lot higher than figures I've seen around, and I just wondered if it would still be ok? Maybe heat would be a problem?

Anyone with any experience of these things care to chip in some advice?

    Hi Mediumdog,

I don't know but hopefully someone who does will reply.
If you don't get any responses I am sure it would be OKfor you to PM IowaDavid. He is extremely knowledgeable in this area and very helpful as well!

    Best wishes,
    Melissa

Thanks, yeah I wasn't sure if IowaDavid was still around but I might PM him (if I can work out how to do it).

By the way melissa, how was the rlt going for you before you stopped, if you don't mind me asking?

From what I read of your reports, you haven't really noticed anything so far. Is that right?

Reading through the reports in this section is pretty encouraging. I'm trying to work out if there is any reason why it helped particular people - perhaps some commonality to their condition.

    Anyway...

Hi, to PM David you just click onto the PM under the name.

I felt like the light therapy was perhaps raising my threshold to burning and flushing but not sure yet. I plan on resuming either next week or the week after next depending on how my face looks (I had VBeam Mon) and will keep you posted.

Good luck and post any info here if you don't mind. Others may want to know this info also.

    All the best,
    Melissa

I would not exceed 10,000 MCD.

Thanks melissa . I spend so much time on here I thought I ought to spruce myself up a bit.

TP: Right, thanks. I just read on the heelspurs infosheet about how the 'mcd' ratings are pretty meaningless because it depends how focussed the light is. Apparently, if its narrowly focussed the rating can really shoot up, but actually, as soon as the light hits the skin it disperses anyway.
But its good to have a ballpark figure. I'll steer clear of the ultra-bright ones.
