  • Medical Paper on Demodex Folliculitis - Relapse after Isotretinoin (Accutane)

Interesting. They treated this guy for 3 years with all the wrong drugs. Started with various antibiotics and finally treated him with Isotretinoin (Accutane). Looked better towards the end of treatment but he relapsed as soon as he stopped the drug. They finally tested him for demodex. Treated him with just the 2 once a week doses of Oral Ivermectin. He cleared up quickly. And was still clear a year later.

Accutane works by greatly reducing the skin's oil production. Accutane starves the mite population down but it doesn't directly kill the mites. Just reduces their food source but only while taking the drug. Accutane has some really nasty potential side effects that are rather common - severely dry skin, chapped lips, thin skin, vision, liver, libido issues and potential for severe birth defects. It also takes months of treatment.

The anti-parasitic drugs don't have the side effects of Accutane and takes 2 weeks of treatment for most people. It also treats and can eliminate the real problem rather than just treating the symptoms.

Excellent article. Good find. I have added it to this post with the subheading, Oral Ivermectin Alone.
