  • gut flora reasearch

I sent a message via the website, but didn't get any answer sadly.
    Sorry to hear that !

In a mail they say the logistic part of the research is not easy --> the research is for free and they now have already 5000 participants (they want to go to 10.000). I think because of logistical reasons they take only Flanders. I fear there aren't many rosaceans between the participants. Your participation had been more than welcome, it's such a pitty you aren't allowed.

Hopefully there will be a cure one time (and I hope we don't have to wait 10 to 20 years)

Yep, we are in the same land! Sad. Like if the gut flora will be different because there is an imaginary border at 5km of my home. I live next to the "linguistic border".
      Too bad!

            • Oregano oil and garlic for treating SIBO

I used oregano oil capsules alternating with one clove crushed garlic as an alternative to pharmaceutical antibiotics, ( these herbs are strong antibiotics) for bacterial overgrowth. Oregano oil is also analgesic and anti inflammatory, as well as well as supportive to digestion. Both kill candida, so will not extirpate bacteria and leave you with collateral damage. Garlic does not kill lacto bacteria, so is quite supportive to digestion.
In my case, this combo worked well in treating bacterial overgrowth. But bacterial Overgrowth will return if the gut/immune system is not fully healed. I think this is where treatment regimens can fail, by not being comprehensive or wholistic enough.
Allopathic medicine blasts the system with pharmaceutical antibiotics that can cause extensive damage to the immune system and gut, temporarily removing bacteria, but also setting the stage for deeper illness.
This search and destroy method is unlikely to be a genuine quick fix and we may require deeper understanding of the interrelationships of the entire body to fully heal.
My bacterial overgrowth was antibiotic induced. Anything that damages the integrity of the gut or gut bacteria can set the stage for SIBO. Research is also linking GMO foods to gut inflammation and immune system dysfunction. One of the few question they ask when you go in for the hydrogen breath test is "Have You Used Antibiotics?"
My Rosacea went away after the use of oregano oil, garlic and a specific carbohydrate diet that does not feed bacteria, but I still had to rebuild my system carefully and slowly through diet. Throughout the rebuild stage, my skin would flush very slightly if my bacteria counts went up or I ate something I was allergic to. Eventually, as the gut heals, the food allergies go away, along with the flushing, and the gut is healthier and less prone to bacterial overgrowth as the immune system improves.
The quick fix mentality can lead to further damage/imbalance. It's a good idea to work with a naturopath who understands digestive and immune system issues.

              • The GAPS diet is meat based, DianaLynn, and I am vegan. What would you suggest?

Starlike, the rebuilding diets I am aware of all include animal products. The Body Ecology Diet less so, but it is for milder health issues, mainly candida.
I was once a vegetarian, and I had to really examine whether or not it served my health well. It's a personal decision.
It is interesting to note that even in the Asian monasteries where vegetarian diets are the norm, meat and fermented dairy are often employed for periods of time to rebuild a damaged or weak constitution.

I deeply appreciate your reply. I have a lot of thinking and research to do.

                    • One of the first objections I can register to any animal based foods is that all animals store toxins in their fat cells and their bones. If I am sick due to the incredibly heavy toxic load we are all carrying right now, and I believe I am, then taking in the toxins the animals couldn't expel by eating them won't help heal much.

Right now I am not eating right at all.. I kind'a just got hopeless for a bit.. but if I can heal this gut problem then it's worth being very strict. I am hoping this SIBO is the core issue. I see the Doc tomorrow.. and I am thinking of... <shudder> taking their SIBO specific anti-bionics... maybe.. ARGH this is hard..

                      Anyway.. also ponder on this..

                      • I had a second zap for thread veins from Pulse Dye today. Dr.Cayton at the Royal Free is a nice guy, would recommend him as a dermatologist to anyone in the UK. I talked to him about Rifaximin/SIBO today but he hadn't heard of the link. He was kind enough to look through the index of his journal for the drug, willing to give it a shot...but it wasn't there! Regret not bringing a copy of the study to him, but that's printer trouble for you.

I wonder if getting an apt with a gastroenterologist is the best route here. I think I'm a likely candidate for the SIBO, so we'll see. Kinda tired of spending money/thinking about my skin at the moment!

                        • Thank you

Just wanted to pipe in to say thank you to all who contributed to this thread over time. I have a ton of questions and need to organize myself a bit. I have an appt in a couple wks with a specialist and need to streamline how I communicate my issues.

I'm curious if there are any updates from those who are mid-treatment (although really, I think a holistic approach that is the essence of this thread could very well be a life style, not a treatment). Hope the thread stays alive, or if there is another more current thread I've missed - would love a pointer.

Note to Starlite - that video was so moving... loved it. I, too was a vegetarian for 20 yrs. I am from the midwest and grew up on the typical "meat and potatoes and dessert" diet, although I generally hated food and was pretty well malnourished as a kid. As I grew I had no position about meat, I just hated it. I hated chewing it and hated swallowing it. I think the chewing is rooted back to a lot of dental work I had as a child - teeth were sore and sensitive a lot (tiny mouth and large teeth - a lot of procedures to widen my pallet); and I had trouble swallowing meet for some reason - probably psychosomatic because I choked on it a couple times. But when I started having severe digestion problems that left me without the ability to digest solid food, I had to re-evaluate my food choices. It wasn't easy but I'm much better now and eat only organic meats (they still contain microbes and bacteria but it has certainly made the transition less stressful for me).

                          • have there been any more success stories treating SIBO with flagyl, rifaximin, peppermint oil, oil of oregano, garlic, etc.?

I need to figure this out ASAP and the two doctors I've gone to asking to be referred to a gastroenterologist basically refused to do it for me. Dermatologist was no help whatsoever as well. Seriously wondering why I bother paying for health insurance.

                            • Stevie-f, my SIBO is completely gone, after a few relapses. I tried a number of things, but in the end the GAPS diet healed me deeply enough to recover my entire immune system. Raw crushed garlic, one clove with meals 1-2 times daily was very effective. Fermented vegies(sauerkraut) for digestive and bone broth for healing the gut and reducing inflammation, proved to be great allies for me. Oregano oil is strong and should be used carefully, as it can wipe out good bacteria from the colon as well as the small intestine.
I didn't introduce probiotics, other than ferments until the SIBO was gone, as a rebuilding strategy. The diet heals the gut and starves the bad bacteria out, while restoring the immune system and organs in a deep way.
In my experience, the antibiotics create further imbalance, which is how my SIBO started.
Once my immune system restored itself, my food sensitivities as well as Rosacea subsided.
Nurture, nurture, nurture ones way back to health for deep recovery.

thank you for your timely response. I am at my wits end here. I bought enteric coated peppermint oil today and I've been taking probiotics. Just recently started avoiding dairy and have always tried to stay away from sugar and gluten, yet still it persists. I'll try the garlic and the oregano oil as well. I have Oreganol will that work or does it need to be coated in pill form? I have a jar of Bubbies sauerkraut in the refrigerator I'll start eating tomorrow. This GAPS diet, I assume is available online somewhere? I am trying to order Rifaximin from goldpharma we'll see how that works out.
