  • NRS Research for 2010

In 2010 the NRS reports on its web site that it spent $71,364 on research grants. However, a careful look at the Form 990 for 2010 reveals that there are only 3 grants mentioned for a total of $37,500. This would mean that for every dollar donated to the NRS in 2010 only 6 cents was spent on rosacea research. How the web site says the NRS spent $71,364 on research is something you can try to figure out. I suppose it costs the NRS $33,864 to give the money to the researchers. This same form reveals that Mr. Huff, director of the NRS, received $115,583 from Glendale and Park, which are independent contractors the NRS uses. Both Glendale and Park are owned by MR. Huff. Glendale and Park received $398,344 of the total donations received which was $617,974. So for 2010 Glendale and Park received 64% of the total donations received.

The 3 research grants recipients reported are the following:

    Veterans Med. Research Fondation
3350 La Jolla Vill. Dr. MC11B
    San Diego, CA 92161
    EIN 33-0189397
    $12,500

    University of California
    San Francisco/Dr.
    1701 Divisidero St., 3rd Floor
    San Francisco, CA
    EIN 94-6036493
    $12,500

    Ohio University/Dr. Thad Wilson
    280 MDL Center
    Athens, OH 45701
    EIN 31-6402113
    $12,500

I think each non-profit organization should publish a clear overview of all expenses ... I yearly donate to the NRS, but I often wonder what happens with the money of all supports. Also a bit more participation of the members in deciding how to spend the money would be welcome. This would contribute to a clear policy...

There are no members of the NRS since it is a closed non profit that doesn't disclose how it is organized. If you spent fifteen minutes and read the Form 990 you could get an idea where the money was spent.

By members I meant people donating money to the NRS. My point is that it is a pitty that NRS supporters can't give much direction to the grants/research the NRS decides to fund.

But for me at this moment there are a few very interesting researches going on : the ferritin-research and the continuation of the Rifaximin/Xifaxan-research

You seem to be very happy with how the NRS spends its donations on rosacea research. And you are not the only one since the NRS web site says that in 2010 more than 70,000 individuals donated $105,436, so you are in a huge group who loves the NRS. And out of that amount only $37,500 was spent on rosacea research according to the Form 990 for 2010.

It is fairly clear from the NRS web site that the board of directors and the medical advisory board decide what rosacea research to sponsor. The board also allows 64% of the funds to be allocated to two private contractors owned by the director of the NRS who is reported to receive $115K in 2010. I have thought for over ten years that a group of rosaceans could do better than how the NRS spends its funds, but most rosaceans like you continue to donate to the NRS. I will continue to point out how the NRS spends its funds and give rosaceans an alternative if they desire to have a say in how donated funds should be spent by a non profit organization on rosacea research.

Maybe I am doing this all wrong with only volunteers who receive no salary. Maybe I should set up a private company and have over 60% the funds donated to the RRDi go to this private corporation that I own and skim off a nice salary from this and spend only 6% of the total donated funds on rosacea research and then rosaceans like you will donate to the RRDi? On second thought, I don't think I will do that because I don't do things like that.

Makes me sick that they CAN get away with abusing that much of the donations! And this people is why we dont have a cure yet.

There is a correction I need to make about the rosacea research that the NRS has done for 2010. If you will note below the expenses reported on the Form 990 for 2010, Part IX, page 10:
                NRS_partIX_form990_2010.jpg
You will note that it shows "Grants and older assistance to governments and organizations in the U.S. with a figure of $37,500. Then it shows grants OUTSIDE THE US to be $23,225. The report only shows the three grants given to those on the US in a list which I provided in the initial post of this thread. The report does not show who the grants went to outside the US. So the total money spent on rosacea research is reported on Form 990 to be $60,725 which is 9.8% of the total donations received in 2010. That means that for every dollar donated to the NRS in 2010 ten cents was spent on rosacea research.

The NRS has received in donations from 1998 thru 2010 $9,795,077. Over this same period (1998 thru 2010) a total of $6,136,606 of these donations the NRS has spent on two independent contractors, Glendale Communcations Group, Inc., of Barrington, Illoinois which is owned by Sam Huff and another independent contractor, Park Mailing and Fulfillment, Inc., which is an affiliate of Glendale or to other corporations owned by Sam Huff. Sam Huff is also the Director of the NRS. That means that the NRS is spending over 62% of the funds of the NRS on two private contractors which the director of the NRS owns. That means for every dollar received in donations 62 cents of that dollar ends up in the hands of corporations which are owned by the director of the NRS.

For the years 1998 thru 2010 the NRS has received in donations a total of $9,795,077 and spent a total of $1,003,696 on rosacea research. That means that about 10% of total donations was spent on research. That means that of every dollar donated to the NRS about ten cents is spent on research.

If you think the NRS is doing a good job then join the 70,000 individuals the NRS says has helped them along.

Does Sam Huff run other foundations?

If you will just take 10 minutes to read the Form 990 in the initial post of this thread, you will notice that it says he spends 7 hours a week on average with NRS and 40 hours a week with Glendale. You will also learn where all the money was spent.

I don't want to start a fuss, but the guy can put anything he likes on a form. :-D

                            Thanks Brady.

P.S. Interesting article today on protein/carbs/glucose. I'll put it in a separate thread.
