  • Swelling that won't go away

Please help! I am actually writing this in search for some remedies to help my mother who is very bothered by the swelling of her face after having laser treatments for her rosacea last year. She had 4 treatments in total and the last one was aboud 9 months ago. The swelling never went away and she has seen many dermatologists already. Some said she might be allergic to the laser treatment and thus put her on high dosage anithisstamins for 3 months, but her condition has not improved. Her face is so swollen that she refuses to take photos now! Please help!!!

Oh, I am so sorry about your poor mom, how awful!
Have the doctors tried prescribing oral steroids to get the swelling down?
It sounds like they need something heavy duty to ease the inflammation/swelling.

How is your mom doing otherwise?

I am sorry to hear about your mother.

Swelling 9 months post treatment certainly sounds like something serious is involved.

Was your mother a bad flusher prior to treatment? Has she become one since?
Lymphatic drainage is impaired in rosaceans/flushers and it sounds like the laser has made this worse.

I am going to cautiously suggest your mother consider taking boswellia for a period of time to see if this helps reduce the swelling.
I recently took it post IPL. The energy was far too high and my goodness, the swelling was awful. It began before I had even got up off the treatment bed. The doc gave me prednisone, but I didn't take it as my immunologist has (in the past) cautioned me against taking this as side effects set in very quickly, particularly in those with inections ( me).
In addition, those in this group who have taken prednisone for one reason or another, nearly always have rebound flares, sometimes nasty ones of considerable duration.

So, after this latest treatment I became quite distraught, as I have had prolonged swelling in the past due to my severe flushing/and post IPL.
I cautiously decided to give the supplement Boswellia a go. My brand is high dose and is combined with tumeric. 'Ethical Nutrients pain relief'.

I think the moderators have known me long enough to know I am not involved in any company.
I mentioned the brand as herbal preparations can be so varied.

It worked for me. BUT due to reasons I have discussed in the below link, I am not comfortable taking it long term.

Always do lots of research before taking anything new.

I forgot to ask, which antihistamines is your mother taking?
Some of these can have unwanted side effects.

Jenny, thanks for your input. The boswellia might be a good option- definitely speak to your mom's doctor about it.

Not everyone can avoid taking oral steroids though on occasion and not everyone will have a rebound. I, for one, have had to take them for a very bad asthma attack that wouldn't go away (many years ago) and after the week or so (cannot remember how long I was on the steroids) of taking them all was fine. Topically applied steroids is a different story but sometimes you need oral steroids. Just wanted to throw that out there as prolonged swelling like that is very troubling. Of course we don't know why she is having the swelling and that is the key for figuring out what treatment is necessary.

So sorry your mom is experiencing this and hopefully she will find something that brings down the swelling.

            Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I am sorry that I did not reply earlier. It took me a while to find this thread again.

My Mother has taken a few courses of oral steroids. In fact, I think the steroids contributed to the swelling a little, too. She has taken quite a few antihistamines, including Xyzal, Telfast, and Zyrtec (we live in Hong Kong, but I assume the drug names are universal?) I think her lympatic drainage is not great either, but she has been going to a massage therapist who said massages around the lymph nodes can help. My Mother is a very stressed out person. She is constantly under stress from work and family. I am hoping we can find something to help her swelling so she could have less stress.

Thanks a lot again! We shall reserach into this supplement!

By the way, I have read on the forum that there is this drug called Lymphodran Plus that helped others' swelling problems. Do you know if it is any good?? My Mom is very sensitve to drugs. She gets all the side effects plus more when she takes drugs. Thus I am very careful when making recommendations to her. At this point, she is willing to try anything as she really hates her face now...

How distressing for your mum!! I have been dealing with facial swelling over the last 12 years on and off due to the rosacea, although never long term post IPL or laser (short term YES, could hardly open my eyes at days and looked like I was properly beaten up). But that this is still a problem for your mum 9 months down the line is very disturbing. I can't offer much info or help, but I found myself in the past that skipping salt and drinking herbal tea from the organic shop that drains away fluids helped a bit. With an underlying problem like with your mum and such local swelling it might not do too much, but just thought about it, it did help my local puffiness at the time a bit. Please keep us updated. Maybe there is a dermatologist who is properly specialised in rosacea in your area/country?

              Best wishes

Hello! I know this is an old post but did the swelling ever go away? If so, how long did it take? I'm dealing with something similar...just over three months from Excel V.
