  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

    Hi there,
I was reading Prima magazine today and there was an article about raynauds and the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in treatments.

It suggests that this therapy reduced spasms and inflammation in the blood vessels. therapy involves sitting in an oxygen chamber for an hour at a time. (often once a day for several weeks).

Sorry, we can’t find the page you were looking for. It may have moved or you may have followed an out of date or incorrect link.

    Hello,
Has anyone heard of anyone benefitting from "Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)" for rosacea? I searched the rosacea yahoo group and found a post:
<< My boyfriend's father (age 71) has rosacea and he refuses to go to a derm. In August of last year, he was diagnosed with severe internal bleeding - the radiation from prostate cancer had weakened the walls of his blood vessels. He was immediately treated in a hyperbaric chamber (he explains it as a pure oxygen submarine with 15 or so other people in it) 5 days per week for months. His rosacea has cleared up! (..and he no longer needs glasses for driving!!) Therefore, it would seem that oxygen treatments to the face could help the rest of us. >>

    and lastly

“Oxygen is an essential ingredient of life, maintaining quality, helping the immune system while promoting the re-vasculation of ischemic tissue. Restriction of vital oxygen levels (hypoxia) accelerates degenerative conditions. Most hypoxic tissues require Hyperbaric pressure to achieve a significant increase in oxygen delivery.”
(“The Life is in the Blood”)

    Sounds promising!!

    interesting find.
If oxygen does indeed help, then i wonder if this might be one reason why people who still exercise (i stopped) report less redness afterwards.
It also makes me think that regular breathing exercises and supplements such as Chlorella would help.

hmmm... my boyfriend is an underwater archaeologist and deep technical scuba diver, so I have fairly easy access to a hyperbaric chamber (for when divers get bent)- he also mentioned that he could easily build a hyperbaric chamber at home - what an interesting fixture for our living room that would be! I'll definitely keep my eye on this- that's a good find!

how much do you think oxygen treatment is likely to cost? I know footballers have it during rehabilitation from injury, so am guessing $$$$$$$

hmmm- I'm not sure about the cost for medical purposes. My boyfriend says that a "chamber ride" as he calls it, can be super expensive- and we'd have to have a lot of treatments, i think. I live in NC, and Duke university apparently has one of the top hyperbaric facilities in the entire world (according to my boyfriend)- Duke also has a rosacea treatment unit, so I'll be contacting them after the holidays to see what I can find out- maybe they've used the chamber to treat rosacea patients? That would be interesting... I'll let you all know.

              That's very interesting MandaO.
I'd love to hear about the Rosacea Treatment Unit that Duke University has. Please do let us know.

              Happy holidays!

In this therapy are people being decompressed or is it just an oxygen tank? If just an oxygen tank then I will just have my husband put a plastic bag over my head and break out one of his oxygen tanks..lol..Husband is a diver..Thanks..Jenn

Jenn- my boyfriend is a diver too, and he said the same thing, LOL. Melissa, I will let you know what Duke says when I talk to them- I know that they have a well-reputed hyperbaric facility and treatment center, but I don't know if they have ever used it in conjunction with the rosacea unit... i'll let you know
Oh, also, I read on their website that if you get bent, then you only need one chamber treatment, but for wound healing people need around 40 treatments! that sounds pretty expensive to me!

Getting bent is dangerous and I dont know if I could do that because of my heart condition. I dont think I would choose to be bent so I would go for the more treatments and if it worked I would spend the money. Let us know what Duke says Manda. I am ready to dive into hubbie's oxygen..lol. Manda, you get your boyfriends oxygen tank and I will get my husbands, come on over and we can get high on oxygen Jenn

                              HBOT

Ihave read that this is very expensive. It is also used in the autism community and many families have a chamber in their home or take their kid to the place for it. Also many families share the cost of a chamber and use it for their families.

When doing a google search on HBOT use autism and you might find more data and also the type of Dr who has this at their office.
